This is Brisingr! It's in the Inheritance Triligy and is the third book in that series and they are SO good! the author is Christiphor Paloni (sp?) so yea you should read it!

It's a journal through time and the universe (as said on the front page of the book) and it is SO FREAKING GOOD!!!! and it's not just for nerds ok? not saying that if you do read them that you're a nerd or anything,but.... never mind i never said that! just read it it's really good
